Most people looking at their crawl space are looking at it because somebody else did first. A contractor has been under the house, come back up with photographs, and quoted somewhere between eight and twenty thousand dollars for encapsulation, a dehumidifier, new supports and a drainage system. The photographs are usually real. The question is which parts of the package the house structurally needs and which are a comfort and air-quality upgrade sold alongside them.

  4. Read the moisture source. Ground water, surface water, a plumbing leak or humid outside air condensing on cool surfaces. The remedies are different and only one of them is drainage.
