Broad Ripple foundations from the bungalow era are frequently Indiana limestone or early poured concrete, and both respond badly to a condition the lower blocks have plenty of: a fluctuating water level close to the underside of the house, courtesy of the canal and the White River.
The damage mechanism is not pressure so much as cycling at the waterline. Masonry that is alternately wet and dry, and in winter alternately saturated and frozen, loses mortar and surface material at the elevation where that cycle happens. The result is a band of deterioration part way up the wall rather than a crack — a wall that is thinning rather than moving.
